Game Guide

Odyssey is a fairly basic hack and slash MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game). It is designed to run on lower end computers, some as slow as 66mhz. Instead of focusing highly on visual, and aural elements, Odyssey tends to focus on gameplay value, and replayability. This guide will demonstrate how the basic functions work and ideologies players should hold.

Main Menu

This is the main menu, it provides all out-of-game functions in a neat little package. To login to an existing account, click “Login.” For new account creation click “New Account.” If you would like to turn the game music, sound, or global speech, click “Options.” For a little bit of information on Odyssey’s past, and various contributors, click “Credits.”

Creating An Account

To create a new account pick a unique username (most players use their alias), which is 3 to 15 alphanumeric or “_” characters in length. Leading and trailing spaces will be stripped from the username and password. When you are choosing a password it is best to create a password which is at least 6 characters long, containing letters and numbers. Make sure your passwords match, then click “Create” to finish the account creation process. Now login to your account.

Logging In

Accessing your account is very simple. Just provide the username, and password from the account you just created and click “Login”. It is not advised to enable “Save Password”.Passwords are stored unencrypted in the odyssey.ini file. They can easily be stolen this way. After logging in, you will be taken to the “Connected” screen. Here you can join the game, change your password, or create a new character. You mustcreate a character before you can join the game.

Creating A Character

Once reaching the character creation screen. You have to decide upon the alias you would like to use. Your alias must be unique to Odyssey, or you will be prompted to choose another. Type the alias you choose into the “Name” textbox. Next you will have to select a class. See the class table to choose the class that is right for you. After that choose a gender: quite simply, male or female. If you wish to have a description, type that in now. You can change it later if you like. Descriptions can be changed with the command: /description “New Description Here”. Descriptions are viewed by clicking on the player who’s description you wish to view. When you are done, click “Create.” Please note that you can only have one character per account, creating a new one on the same account will delete the old one.

Controls

Welcome to the world of Odyssey. To move around use the arrow keys. If you would like to run hold shift while moving. Running uses up energy, so ensure that you do not run out of energy near a deadly monster. To make your character attack press control in front of a monster. To pick up an item (referred to as an object) hit enter while standing over one. Equipping an object is simple, just double click the object you wish to equip in your inventory. To unequip that object, double click it as well. Dropping an object is achieved by right clicking the corresponding object.

The Client Window

Health: is your life force, when it reaches zero, you die. Fortunately in Odyssey, death is not a big deal. You merely lose one third of your experience, and all equipped items. These deficits only affect you after you have reached level 10.

Energy: is used for skills, attacking, and running. When your energy reaches zero you can no longer run or use skills.

Mana: is your magical energy, or aura. It is used to cast magical spells. If you do not have enough mana to cast a spell, it will fail.

Your inventory window will contain all the objects you have collected throughout the world of Odyssey. There are a few types of objects. Namely, money, weapons, helmets, armour, rings, shields, potions, keys, and unusable items. Potions and keys are used by double clicking them. Some keys are indestructible, others are not. When you die you will only lose the objects you have equipped. Objects can also be stored in your bank or guild hall vaults.

There are three different types of maps, as seen below. Red, white, and blue (cyan). The colours differentiete each type of map from one another.

Blue maps are friendly maps, there is no player killing on these maps, whatsoever.

White maps are guild player killing maps. Only guilds may player kill each other on these maps.

Red maps are player killing maps. Anyone can player kill on these maps. These are the maps to watch out for. Veteran players will attempt to trick newer players into entering player killing maps.

Taking A Look Around

Depending upon where you are born into the world, you may have to travel a little bit to get to the town of Crendale. Crendale is in the center of the Odyssey world. Everything revolves around it, and it’s best to start there because the Well Quest is in Crendale. You may be born into Crendale, Dragonia, or Northcoast.

Your First Quest

Now it’s time for your first quest. Walk into the well on your left. You will enter the sewers of Crendale. Ignore the pesky rats, they are just there to slow you down. Run past, and onto the next map. Once you reach that point, follow the sewer path down, and where ever it goes from there till you reach the end where a bridge lays. Cross the bridge and go into the pyramid. Pick up the items and equip them, and exit through the other pyramid. You have completed the Well Quest! Good job!

Banking

To use a bank, type the command /deposit or /withdraw when there is a bank NPC present. Banks are located in every town except Northcoast. To deposit an object or gold coins, double left click the corresponding object in your inventory. If you are depositing gold coins, then specify the amount you wish to deposit. To withdraw an item, double left-click on the object you wish to withdraw. To withdraw gold, double click the area which says “Gold Coins.” A window will then appear asking, “how much would you would like to withdraw?” Enter the amount and continue on your way.

Player Statuses

Throughout you’re adventures in Odyssey, you will find that different players have different coloured names. Each colour represents some attribute. Below is a list of definitions for these colors.

Newbie A status that is given to a player the first time they logon. It only exists this way until that player logs off.
Normal Your average Odyssey player. Nothing special to convey about this status.
Guilded This player is a member of a guild. Left click that player to see what guild he or she belongs to.
God This player is an administrator. Administrators are reffered to as gods, in Odyssey.
Victim This player is a victim of the gods’ mischief.

Death

Death in odyssey isn’t so bad. You only lose one third of your experience, all of the objects you have equipped, and a few random items in your inventory. Also, if you are under level 10, the angel of mercy protects you from losing your items. You will remain dead for 20 seconds, or until someone revives you.

Player Commands

Commands are used in Odyssey to interact with the game. A command begins with a forward slash, followed by the command name, and parameters separated by spaces. An example of a command would be:

/broadcast Help me with commands!

If you would like to use a parameter with spaces in it, encase it in quotes like so:

/tell “Player Name” This is a tell, the equivalent of a private message.

Repairing

Repairing your equipment is an easy task. Simply unequip any object(s) you would like to repair, highlight an object and click repair. The object you highlighted will be repaired if you have the required amount of gold coins in your inventory. If you would like to repair all the items in your inventory, highlight one of them and click the repair all button. Some items such as, Protection Rings, Excaliburs, and Guardian Plates cannot repaired.

What’s Next?

Now let’s head one screen to the right and up from the Crendale Keep.  This is the Norax Quest.  This is the next of many questing opportunities that can both assist you in obtaining gear and experience.  Type /quests for details.

Extra Help

If you are confused or need help with anything else, just type /broadcast Help me please! and a friendly god or player will help you with anything you need.

Guilds

In medieval games, clans are referred to as Guilds. Guilds essentially are groups of people that work together for a common cause. That cause in Odyssey is Player Killing. There are various perks to being a member of a guild. These include: guild halls, custom sprites, guild chat, and being unable to attack members of the same guild. However, when you are a member of a guild, white (guild player killing) maps can be deadly. Being guilded and present on a white map makes you vulnerable to attacks by members of other guilds. If you are level 20 then you can join a guild. To join a guild you must be invited to join one. When you receive a guild invitation type: /guild join to join that guild. To create a new guild you must be at least level 30, and have 10 000 gold coins. If you meet those requirements then you can use the /guild new command. Players can then be invited to join your guild with the /guild invite command. If you would like to remove a player from your guild, use /guild edit, and remove the player from the guild edit window. Adding declarations will guide the behavior of fellow guild mates. Allied guilds are generally befriended, and enemy guilds are hunted down. Guild declarations can be added from the guild edit window.

Guild Ranks

Rank: Description:
Founder Founders are the top-level guild rank. Upon creating a guild you are automatically appointed founder of that guild. Founders have complete access to the guild. They can buy guild halls, invite members to the guild, kick members. Founders can also create and remove declarations. They however, cannot kick other founders from the guild. So for security reasons, the creator of the guild should be the sole founder. Founders have access to the guild hall.
Lord Lords are the second highest guild rank. They still have moderate control over the guild. Be very careful who you appoint to this rank. Lords can invite people to the guild, kick members or initiates, invite players to the guild, add and remove declarations, and demote or promote members and initiates. They have access to the hall.
Member Members are the stock of a guild. Most of the guild should be of this rank. The only benefit of the member rank, is access to the hall.
Initiate Initiates are new members of the guild who have not earned their access to the hall. Consider an initiate a trial rank, to see if someone is worthy of the guild.

Guild Maintenance

To put gold into your guild bank use the command /guild pay amount. Once gold coins are deposited, they cannot be withdraw. To view the bank balance of your guild type /guild balance. There is a guild upkeep fee which must be paid every day, otherwise your guild will be disbanded. The fee per member increases by guild size. On top of that, if your guild owns a hall; You must pay the hall upkeep. To view the info on a hall you would like to purchase, use the command /guild hallinfo. If you are a founder or lord of your guild you can purchase a guild hall with the /guild buy command. If you would like to view the specifications of your guild, disband it, add and remove declarations, change player ranks, or just manage your guild, type /guild edit.

Guild Statuses

Guilded This player is a member of another guild, and capable of attacking you on a white map.
Member This is either you, or another member of your guild.
Ally This player is a member of an allied guild. You shouldn’t usually attack allied guilds.
Enemy This player is a member of a guild you are at war with. Do what you will to him / her.

Guild Commands

Guild commands, are a subset command group. What that means is you have to type /guild before each command like this:

/guild new

The parameter after /guild is the subset command group. Another example would be:

/guild chat Hi guys, I just logged on :) .

Command: Example: Description:
/guild who /guild who Displays a list of online guild mates.
/guild join /guild join Joins a guild you’ve been invited into. You must be at least level 20 to join a guild.
/guild invite /guild invite Joe Invites a player to your guild.
/guild leave /guild leave Leaves a guild you are a member of.
/guild pay /guild pay 1000 Deposits gold coins into your guild’s bank account.
/guild new /guild new Creates a new guild, you must have 10 000 gold coins, and be at least level 30.
/guild edit /guild edit Brings up the guild edit screen for the guild you belong to.
/guild chat /guild chat Howdy! Sends a message to all your guild mates.
/guild hallinfo /guild hallinfo Displays information about the guild hall you are standing in.
/guild buy /guild buy Purchases the guild hall you are standing in, by withdrawing the price from your guild bank.
/guild balance /guild balance Displays your guild’s bank balance.

Macros

The concept of macros is not complex at all. Macro, in a poor translation, meaning to make something larger. This is achieved by macro keys. Macro keys in Odyssey are ALT-F1 through ALT-F10. To add a macro, type /macros and add any text you wish into the macro of your choice. If you would like the macro to automatically send after pressing the corresponding macro key, then enable “Line Feed.” Otherwise the macro will be sent into the main window like it does when you type. Macros are generally used for URLs, common sayings, upon the death of an enemy, or for text copied from somewhere else.

Welcome To The World That Is Odyssey

Good luck, adventurer! and don’t venture too far out into the land too early! You will not drop any items upon death until level 10, so it’s not a total loss if you do perish.
